Self-deception is the engine of social deception

The best lie is one you believe yourself. When you're genuinely convinced of something, you don't have the tells of deliberate deception — no hesitation, no overcorrection, no anxiety about being caught. You just believe it.

This is why we don't only lie to others — we lie to ourselves first. The mask worn long enough becomes the face. The role played long enough becomes who you are. Stories we tell about our own motives are much harder to fact-check than stories about the world: when you make claims about external events, people can say "that's not what happened." But when you claim a motive, the only witness is you — and you've already convinced yourself.

Self-deception isn't a reasoning error. It's a feature. We're selected for it because it makes us better at social maneuvering.
