Musk wasn't the first -- Gates, Clinton, and others have made the same comparison. But the confusion runs deeper than metaphor. Social media platforms are communication tools. The public square was a commercial and civic institution.

A communication tool connects people who want to communicate. An institution shapes behavior through its structure, brings together people who didn't choose each other, and generates civic life as a byproduct of daily necessity. The town square didn't work because it was good at enabling speech. It worked because it was where life happened, and speech followed.

You can't replicate the civic output by copying the communication layer. The exhaust doesn't run without the engine.
