Most people split life into two zones: productive time (hard, no fun) and fun time (couch, chips, reality TV). Neither is particularly satisfying. The first is joyless; the second is low-reward passive dopamine.
A better model is a balanced portfolio across three types of fun, spread across relationships, work, and hobbies. Getting all three is a skill — it doesn't happen by default. The skill is knowing which type you need and being willing to do the work for it.
| Type | During | After | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Pleasurable | Pleasurable | Great dinner with a close friend |
| II | Hard or uncomfortable | Satisfying | Writing a long piece; running |
| III | Painful or absurd | Great story | Disaster situation you laugh about later |
Source claim: Having a balanced fun portfolio across all three types is a skill most people never develop because they default to low-effort passive pleasure.
