Avoidance That Looks Like Effort

Thesis. The most durable avoidances are the ones that look like virtue. Manufactured difficulty reads as rigor, credentialing reads as education, photogenic philanthropy reads as altruism. Because the appearance is what earns the social credit, nobody (including the person doing it) develops a reason to interrogate it. The credit is the protection.

Why these cohere. The pattern is the same at every scale, and the notes climb the scale on purpose. [[Choosing the harder problem is procrastination disguised as effort]] is the personal instance: manufactured difficulty earns the appearance of rigor, and the person doing the avoiding gets to keep a self-image that wouldn't survive solving the easy version. [[Self-deception is the engine of social deception]] supplies the cognitive mechanism. Genuinely believing the cover story eliminates the tells, which makes the avoidance structurally invisible from the inside. [[Conformist transmission makes social learning humanity's primary cognitive mode]] explains why the protection compounds rather than fades. We are wired to copy what is seen being rewarded, and the mechanism does not switch off when the tribe is wrong, so the avoidance that earns credit gets copied, and the copies become the new baseline. [[Institutions serve hidden social goals alongside their stated ones]] takes the logic to structural scale. Credentialing passes as education; photogenic philanthropy passes as altruism; the inefficiency relative to the stated goal is the measure of how much hidden work the institution is doing for its participants. And [[Kegare makes J-horror epidemiological, not theological]] supplies the metaphysical frame that closes the argument. In the kegare model, contamination spreads spatially and amorally, without intent and without legible moral failure. That is what the pattern looks like with no agent inside it. There is no purification rite for what doesn't look like pollution, no exorcism for an avoidance that passes for effort, no reform of an institution whose hidden purpose is doing exactly what it was built to do. The trap holds because nothing about it looks like a trap.

Constituent notes

  • [[Choosing the harder problem is procrastination disguised as effort]] — Manufactured difficulty reads as rigor and earns self-credit; avoidance that looks like effort is more durable than avoidance that looks like avoidance.
  • [[Self-deception is the engine of social deception]] — Genuinely believing your cover story eliminates the telltale signs of deliberate deception; self-deception is a selected feature, not an error.
  • [[Conformist transmission makes social learning humanity's primary cognitive mode]] — Social learning is humanity's primary cognitive advantage, so we copy whatever earns visible credit, and the mechanism doesn't turn off when the tribe is wrong.
  • [[Institutions serve hidden social goals alongside their stated ones]] — Major social institutions are inefficient in proportion to their hidden purposes: credentialing passes as education, status-affiliation passes as altruism.
  • [[Kegare makes J-horror epidemiological, not theological]] — J-horror's kegare model makes evil spatial and contagious rather than moral and correctable; there is no purification rite for what doesn't look like pollution.

The thesis is your opener. The connective paragraph is your map. The notes are your evidence in the order they appear. Kegare is the closer, not a sidebar. Resist the urge to soften it with a prescription.
